Lifesource Course Development

Material for Lifesource courses has been developed by Ps Peter Sutcliffe (MA Th) emanating from his many years experience in ministry. Peter noticed that in counseling the way people saw things, or their individual mindset, was a large part of their problem. The issue was to help people develope a divine perspective on their situation.   In 2002 Peter began exploring this more closely revisiting previous courses he had developed in this area. He came to recognize that the Ten Commandments reveal what breaks relationship between people and communities (i.e. the principle of The Law). Clearly if there are those things that break relationship then conversely there must be those things that build and restore relationship.  Since the Law set out what not to do there must be behind this the basis of good relationships, i.e. the how to of good relationship. He began to concentrate on the principles behind the commandments that can lead to the restoring and building of relationship. His research focused on these Lifesource Principles which led to a clear revelation of how they impact relationships, the way we see God, ourselves and others. As these concepts were explored it led to the opening up of other related areas and from this the Lifesource courses are developed.   Since that time Peter and Ann have combined their time in ministry, Peters’ Prophetic mantle (revelation of how God thinks) and Scriptural insights to develop the Lifesource courses. Character 101 – Course Overview: This course presents a basic outline on what is character and how it can be developed. It examines the relationship of a person to their own strengths and weaknesses. Whilst a person’s strengths can qualify them in life it is the weaknesses that can end up disqualifying a person. Character is the resultant impact on our personality due to the decisions we make not those made for us. This course examines a basic framework for decision making in life.

Empowering People for Radical Transformation

1. Introduction: An Olympic marathon runner, after struggling to complete the marathon due to physical exhaustion and having finally entered the stadium long after every other runner had finished or withdrawn, replied to a journalist’s question as to why he had not simply withdrawn “My country did not send me just to start the race but to finish the race.” Similarly the concept of success in life cannot just be related to moments and tasks in life but to the whole of life and should be sustainable up to the finish of a life. In a race the runner can appear to be winning the race but lose and can also appear to be losing the race yet win. The idea is to win the race of your own life not another person’s.   A prominent motivational speaker once declared that success is the gradual realization of a worthy goal. Success should always be consistent with the ethical values held by a person. Hence, integrity of character is essential in both formation and outworking of a persons goal. A prominent TV preacher once declared that the simplest definition of success is to find a need and fill it. In other words start doing what needs to be done and opportunity will open before you. Also don’t focus on what you lack or your circumstances, whether adverse or favorable, but focus instead on your possibilities. Winston Churchill is supposed to have said that some people see the difficulty in every opportunity while others see the opportunity in every difficulty.

The God who works all things to the good of a person shaping their lives in the image of Christ (Ro. 8:28) is the One who is able to do beyond a person’s wildest dreams (Eph. 3:20). Therefore the only limitation that is imposed on a person is that of the ability to dream. The simplest path to success that will work under all circumstances is to serve your way to the top. Certainly the biblical stories of Joseph and Daniel show that the best way to reach the top in life is to undertake appointed tasks wholeheartedly and serve effectively those who appointed the tasks. Both of these biblical characters achieved prominence and success despite being in the most adverse circumstance possible; they were both slaves and rose to prominence from their seemingly impossible circumstances. A Christian sage once declared that the simplest definition of success is to find the will of God and do it. Success is a lifestyle not only an event because life is a marathon not just a sprint. Also your success in your life is measured by the divine plan for your life; it is not measured by any other person’s life, successful or otherwise. Defining Success

A vital ingredient for individual success to become a sustainable successful life is a good decision making process and this will involve putting in place good guidance systems. A Ballistic Missile’s guidance system helps it to determine and maintain a course to hit a desired target. Similarly the guidance system of a life helps focus that life to set goals and objectives and make decisions that determine and maintain a course that is consistent with the perception of success. Success culminates with hitting the target and finishing the race. Humanity is created within the context of the divine purpose and as a result ultimate success is hitting the divine predetermined target.

The predetermined target God has for every person born concerns ‘who’ they become not ‘what’ they become or do, Ro. 8:27-29. This Scripture declares that God is exerting His influence over all the circumstances in a person’s life to the end of Christ-like character in a person’s life. Therefore, true success in hitting the divine target concerns the character developed in all the goals set and the achievements accomplished. Success in achieving a particular goal may be of value to others but if it is achieved without integrity of character it doesn’t contribute to a successful life. The ultimate aim should be both success through life and success in life.

The provision of guidance as the basis for good decision making is both external and internal. External guidance includes input from other people, experiences and circumstances, which allows for individual successes. However, ‘Power of Ten’© concerns establishing an internal guidance system that allows for sustainable success. It offers a set of Kybernetic© Principles that can in-build an internal guidance system for life, i.e. both for daily living and for the whole of life. The word ‘kybernetic’© has been created as a term that encompasses the ‘art and science of guidance’. Consequently, Kybernetic© principles develop a sound guidance system. What is Kybernetics?

2. An In-Built Internal Guidance System for Life: ‘Power of Ten’©: Guidance is what links the present to the future, or, vision to fulfillment. This concept is the same as the way the guidance system links the missile and target. Guidance is the connection that will allow the fulfillment of the vision of the will of God in the life of a person. A person’s guidance system locks on to the vision of what is perceived to be success. It directs decisions as well as informing the formation of intermediate goals and objectives so that what is perceived to be success is achieved in reality. Sustained success in life results in a positive life; however, this requires a positive vision. Positive visioning is a result of being positioned for the divine perspective and then accessing the divine provision for fulfillment. What is Positive Visioning?

‘Power of Ten’© is a set of ten principles that will allow a person to position themselves for a divine perspective firstly on God and His universe, and, secondly on self and others. In the process of making decisions that guide the outworking of life from this perspective character consistent with the divine perspective is developed. It is this ingredient of character that turns an event of success into sustainable success in life. The word ‘sustain’ means to uphold or maintain and hence keep in existence.  The concept of ‘character’ involves the idea of distinctive traits or qualities and for the Christian that means the character displayed in Jesus. It also involves the idea of moral strength or fortitude and hence is the measure of resolve to maintain the distinctive traits.

Therefore, character is the ingredient that allows success to become sustainable turning successes into a successful life.   Consequently, the ‘Power of Ten’© principles form and develop a mindset that will result in consistent character formation as well as clarifying vision and its projection into the future. Hence, employing and empowering ‘Power of Ten’© Principles in the mindset, which then impacts life, creates a framework that is able to guide the process of change as a person moves towards fulfillment of their destiny. ‘Power of Ten’© will result in the revolutionizing of a mindset that leads to transformation of a person, (see the discussion on Ro. 12:2). The ‘Power of Ten’©principles act in concert to ensure that this revolution is in accordance with the divine purpose; hence the simplest definition of success is achievable; i.e. “find the will of God and do it.” How do I find God’s will?

3. ‘Power of Ten’© Principles: An Overview: The 1st and 2nd Principles deal with the big questions of life, who is God and who am I? The answer to these questions provides guidance in establishing self-identity for personal development.

The 3rd Principle projects a vision for character, i.e. what happens to you in the course of life. The result of employing and being empowered by these first 3 Principles is a determination of what life should be expressed by a person. The 4th Principle guides the development of inter-personal relationships, which are the starting place of true fulfillment in life. It is from inter-personal relationships that potential in life is discovered and empowerment for success is released, i.e. what happens through you in the course of life. The first four Principles establish the Divine-human relationship as the paradigm for human-human relationships and the basis of transformational change in life.

The 5th Principle establishes the basis of functional relationship, which is the foundational basis of human-human inter-personal relationship. It provides the parameters guiding the formation of a relationship that will allow communion of people and development of community, which is where the opportunity for inter-personal relationships will arise. Therefore, the 4th Principle acts in concert with the 5th Principle as pivotal in developing the full spectrum of human relationship.

The last five Principles allow the expansion of life through relationships into fulfillment of divine character and purpose. Therefore, the first 5 Principles provide a platform that will allow people undergoing the process of change to relate together in community effectively for the common good. The second 5 Principles will provide the context and framework for the outworking of this basis into a person’s life and hence community. Consequently, it is the last five Principles that will determine what life is expressed by a person. Success depends on relationships, which includes successes both as an event and as a lifestyle. Consequently, sustainable success depends on sustainable relationships.

The last five Principles as they are outworked to empower a life result in sustainable healthy relationships. The vision of potential character becomes actual character in the life in a person. Without relationships character remains idealistic and unrealized and subsequently success is only an event that has no value other than its occurrence.   The 6th Principle guides a person in avoiding the fracturing and breaking of relationship. It also deals with how to establish emotional control in the conducting of relationships. The 7th, 8th and 9th Principles involve three areas of faithfulness that will develop integrity that will result in the preservation of relationships. The 7th Principle deals with emotional faithfulness; it also deals with the positive control and positive development of desires. The 8th Principle guides the handling of material faithfulness (i.e. both finances and possessions). As a result it deals with becoming productive and being a giver not a taker in relationships. The 9th Principle guides development of faithfulness in communication. The importance of this Principle is seen in the fact that without integrity in communication no real relationship is formed. Faithfulness in communication allows acquaintanceship to become relationship.

The 10th Principle concerns the issue of motivation as motivation is what will determine contentment. Ultimately a person will not see themselves as successful unless they can find true contentment. In 1 Tim. 6:3-10 the apostle Paul discusses the impact of contentment. Paul asserts that people seek to use godliness as a way of gain as though this will bring contentment. However, Paul states that godliness with contentment is itself great gain. It is contentment that leads to true achievement and growth, and this comes with godliness, it cannot be purchased. Success that leads only to accumulation of wealth and/or power will not lead to contentment but rather become a cruel master driving a person towards destruction. The real success is in who a person becomes and, it is this that frees them to enjoy the fruits of their successes and find contentment.

The Kybernetic© Principles are an inter-related process in which the Principles interact with one another in character development. This interaction is most often sequential. A result of the sequential nature is that a breakdown in one Principle in a person’s life has a negative impact on the subsequent development from the succeeding Principles. Consequently, the 10th Principle not only has a positive impact but also has a monitoring effect that allows a person to find and locate problem areas in their life so that they can be dealt with. A lack of contentment in an area of life can indicate a problem area in a particular Principle. This type of problem will result in malformation of the internal guidance system. It also leads to character problems that are recurrent despite any effort to overcome an apparent weakness. In this sense this 10th principle can be a starting point for a person, i.e. seeking to gauge the degree of contentment and any discontentment. Discontentment can point to areas covered in a Principle so that a person can begin to address these areas. Just as the negative effect impacts sequentially so the positive impacts sequentially and this can often lead to correction of problems that on the surface seem unrelated.
